AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY ON LEARNERS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AWENDO SUB COUNTY, MIGORI COUNTY A project submitted in completion of Research conducted on the field by Senior Professionals. June 2023 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND 1.0 Introduction. Education Technology is a major concern in many schools in Kenya today. While technology has disrupted most sectors of the economy and changed how we communicate, access information, work, and even play, its impact on schools, teaching, and learning has been much more limited. We believe that this limited impact is primarily due to technology being been used to replace analog tools, without much consideration given to technology’s comparative advantages. When schools use technology to enhance the work of educators and to improve the quality and quantity of educational content, learners will improve in their general performance. 1.1 Definition of Education Technology. Educational technology is a field of study that investigates the process of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the instructional environment and learning materials in order to improve teaching and learning.Educational technology research has passed through a number of stages, focusing, in turn, on the content to be learned, the format of instructional messages, and the interaction between computers and students. The field is now concerned with the study of learning in complete, complex, and interactive learning environments.Val Dusek (2006) claims that the “consensus” definition of technology is characterized by a systems approach, as opposed to a tools or a rules approach.Dusek (2006) examines various definitions of technology. He suggests a systems approach as the ideal definition of technology.Well in our finding, Education Technology is the combined use of computer hardware, software, and educational theory and practice to facilitate learning and it can be abbreviated as edtech. 1.2 Empirical study to Education Technology Technological developments in education have occurred recently after the spread of the corona virus. Starting from television, radio, computers and smart phones, all of them have an important meaning in reaching the potential of students. At the time before the pandemic occurred, education problems in Migori county included, learning that was not in accordance with the needs, lack of learning experience and so on. After the current pandemic, there has been a massive change in the world of education, so that the teaching and learning process is difficult to do because there are still efforts to adapt to existing changes. Therefore, this can be a challenge in itself for the world of education in solving these problems. 1.3 Impacts of Education Technology on learners Access information more easily: •Technology makes it easier for students to find information quickly and accurately. •Adds a fun-factor to learning.Outside the classroom, students use technology in all aspects of their lives. Within the classroom, technology can make learning more fun and exciting. •Prepares students for the workforce to thrive in the 21st-century. •Technology has made it possible for students to gain qualifications online and educate themselves through institutes that offer online courses. 1.4 Challenges faced by learners in areas with poor educational technology. • Poor Network Infrastructure. •Unreliable Devices And Software •Administrators Don’t See The Need For More Technology •Lack of clarity about the purpose of education • Short Attention Span •Lack Of Motivation •Lack Of Practical Education 1.5 Solutions to the challenges faced by learners in areas with poor educational technology. •Training >According to NEA results (2008) teachers today report increasing confidence using classroom technology, operating software, and searching the internet, but given that technology is constantly changing, it is more important than ever that teachers stay up-to-date with their technological expertise. •Support >According to statistics reported by the U. S. Department of Education (2010), 68% of school districts reported having adequate support for educational technology. 1.6Many considerations can allow the interviewer maximum comfort and minimum confusion during the interview process. For instance, it is helpful to adopt a convention that differentiates between the words that interviewers are to read to respondents and words that are instructions.A common convention is to use uppercase letters for instructions and lowercase for questions to be read aloud. In conclusion, students learning in remote areas have a vast understanding of the modern technology and it's importance to education. This is clearly evidenced in the research conducted in close supervision and management of the learners and technology in Migori county.
